A few days ago, I noticed a few small holes in the broccoli plants. The next day, I noticed some in the radishes and thought, “hmm, I wonder if they are related.” Now, a few in the spinach. I haven’t seen any bugs, but I haven’t had time to investigate either. It appears to be the workings of a flea beetle judging from pictures I found on the web. I plan on doing a thorough investigation this weekend if the weather allows. I’ll post pictures of the damage, and the offenders if found.

38 Degrees
…apparently is the low tonight. I covered the tomatoes and squash with buckets and then blankets or towels, and brought the peppers in since they weren’t planted in the ground yet. I think the rest (peas, broccoli, onions, lettuce) should be OK. Now we play the waiting game.

Room to grow
This evening I transplanted my tomato seedlings into larger containers, and was hoping to do the same with my peppers but I ran out of supplies. Once they’ve had a few days to settle in, I am going to begin hardening them by taking them outdoors in the evening at first, and then progressing to putting them in a shady spot in the morning to sit all day. Once they make it through that, I will leave them in the sun and only take them in at night when the temp dips down. It sounds like a little bit of work, but I didn’t do this much with the broccoli which led to its demise. Oh, and I am doing the quick version of this now with the lettuce and romaine I will be planting this week as well.

Here are some pictures of the squares that are showing signs of life. These were taking last night, and unfortunately I think my pepper plant may have took a turn for the worse. This morning it is all shriveled and droopy. I probably should be bringing it in at night when it gets cold. I guess if it does die I will just go back to Lowe’s and buy another one.

Could have been better, could have been worse
After I planted the lettuce and broccoli seedlings, we received a small bit of frost. Lost most of the broccoli, but all of the lettuce and romaine turned out fine. Since the frost occurred a day after I planted them and then we had sunny days, I am wondering if I didn’t harden them enough and the sun may have finished the job. Either way, that’s what the garden stores are for. I picked up a tray of nine seedlings, which was plenty, and stuck six of them in the ground. They look a lot better than the ones I had anyway.
Something might grow, if I’m lucky
I planted the leaf lettuce, romaine, and broccoli seedlings, but didn’t season them well so I worry that they may not make it. The broccoli plants looked a little off anyway, so I think I need to lower my expectations.
Almost Here
The schedule says I should be planting the broccoli, spinach, and peas this weekend. I think the weather might say something else. This week, I have been cutting, bending, and placing the conduit for holding the trellis netting and deer net. More on that tomorrow.
I have also been adjusting the plant locations under the grow light to keep each set in the optimum location. I start the seeds in the kitchen using a warming mat, and move them to the basement under a grow light once they germinate. The grow light is a basic shop light with one “warm” and one “cool” bulb. Underneath, I have a few trays sitting on various boxes and tubs, which I use to adjust the height to keep each plant within about two inches from the bulbs. I am planning on mixing the soil tomorrow so I can plant on Sunday, but we will see what happens.
