Weekly update – May week 3

Just trying to keep bugs and fungi away from the plants. The recent sunny days have been nice after the week or so of rainy, cold weather. The tomato and squash are still on a day to day basis, but all of the cold weather plants are taking off. Note to self, plant tomato and summer squash later next year.

Broccoli and Romaine

Tomato plant, with fungus?

38 Degrees

…apparently is the low tonight. I covered the tomatoes and squash with buckets and then blankets or towels, and brought the peppers in since they weren’t planted in the ground yet. I think the rest (peas, broccoli, onions, lettuce) should be OK. Now we play the waiting game.

Weekly update – May week 1

In the last week, I haven’t done much with the garden. It rained a few days so watering hasn’t been an issue, and everything seems to be growing well. The plan for this week is to get the cucumber, bean, and dill seeds planted, as well as to transplant the tomato, squash, and lettuce  plants. After that, it looks like I will be close to being done with planting.

Room to grow

This evening I transplanted my tomato seedlings into larger containers, and was hoping to do the same with my peppers but I ran out of supplies. Once they’ve had a few days to settle in, I am going to begin hardening them by taking them outdoors in the evening at first, and then progressing to putting them in a shady spot in the morning to sit all day. Once they make it through that, I will leave them in the sun and only take them in at night when the temp dips down. It sounds like a little bit of work, but I didn’t do this much with the broccoli which led to its demise. Oh, and I am doing the quick version of this now with the lettuce and romaine I will be planting this week as well.

Tomato and Basil

Started tomato and basil plants this evening. Still waiting for the jalapenos to sprout, but the bell peppers I started last week germinated and were actually quite tall. I need to rearrange how I have them placed under the light, perhaps tomorrow.

More Seeds

Found a type of Jalapeno from Burpee’s website called a False Alarm Hybrid. Appears to be what I was looking for in a tame pepper. I also found an indeterminate Roma, as all of the one in the stores are determinate and I want vines to save space. I ordered those as well as onion sets and seed potatoes.
